  • Condition: Great condition but underneath the larger front beaded pendant when opened is a burlap like plant fiber pouch which was covered in two different layers of fabric which has mostly deteriorated on the front and back of the burlap base. Also, the smaller beaded pendant has a fabric covered back with a small spot of deteriorated holes through which the thick plant fiber backing can be seen which attests to this piece's age. The white antique European mandrel wound beads are in great condition.

    Description

    This is a rare, antique, Yoruba tribally made and used, beaded diviner's Odigba Ife necklace which has two pendants one which hangs in the front and one which hangs in the back. Both glass seed beaded panel pendants are decorated; one with geometric designs on the front and the other with a face which represents an ancestor on the front. Great condition but underneath the larger front beaded pendant when opened is a burlap like plant fiber pouch which was covered in two different layers of fabric which has mostly deteriorated on the front and back of the burlap base. Also, the smaller beaded pendant has a fabric covered back with a small spot of deteriorated holes through which the thick plant fiber backing can be seen which attests to this piece's age.The white antique European mandrel wound beads are in great condition.This beaded Yoruba tribal specimen comes from Nigeria, Africa. The beaded panel pendants measures 7.75 inches long by 7.33 inches wide and 6 inches long by 6.25 inches wide and they both have very intricate beadwork and great colors. The necklace strands measure 42 inches long on each side and haves amazing built in three dimensional beaded accent cylinders.These Odigba Ifa necklaces were worn by the diviners for protection as it was believed that the beaded panels when worn hang over vulnerable areas for the diviner at the chest and the back which protect these areas from attack from spirits or rival diviners.
