Fisher "Uranium Scout" Model T (1950-1955) Geiger Counter "As Is"
This is a relic of the Atomic/Cold War Age. The "Uranium Scout" Model "T" circa 1950-1955, was a neat looking prospector's Geiger Mueller (GM) survey instrument manufactured by Fisher Research Laboratory, Inc. of Palo Alto, CA. designed for uranium prospecting.
The survey meter's
CIRCUIT BOX
is constructed of a top and bottom housing made of stamped steel and aluminum measuring 7.75" x 4.25" x 4.25" approximate.
There are two controls: a
RANGE
switch (Off, X1, X10 ans X100) and a
CALIBRATE
(sensitivity/calibration) adjustment. The range is 0-500, 0-5,000 0-50,000 cpm. 0-1, 0-10, 0-100 ore concentration (percent ?)
There's no speaker to provide an audible signal but has a standard 1/4 jack for a
HEAD PHONE
set.
For ease of operation, the circuit box can be attached to the surveyor's belt as shown in the 2nd exhibit.
The Bakelite
DETECTOR PROBE
is connected to the circuit box via a detachable cable and houses a
Victoreen 1B85 Thyrode Thin Wall
GM tube 30 mg/cm2 which has
collapsed
as shown in the 4th exhibit.
The survey meter required one (1) 45 volt battery (Eveready #455 or equivalent NEDA 201), one (1) 67.5 volt B battery (Eveready #467 or equivalent NEDA 203) and two (2) 1.5 volt type D flashlight cell batteries
(Eveready #D99 or equivalent)
ALL NOT INCLUDED
. Although the Eveready #455 and #467 carbon-zinc batteries have been discontinued they have become available as alkaline through another brand, Exell Battery, and can be purchased on-line (e.g. Lowe's)
This survey meter is shipped with an adjustable canvas shoulder strap with hook clips at opposite ends and a head phone set as shown in the 3rd exhibit.
This is mainly a "museum" piece.
The survey meter was tested with the appropriate batteries and didn't respond to a radioactive source when powered-on. No
audible sounds were heard in the headset and a small bulb lit-up as shown in the 11th exhibit. The interior is clean
as the exhibits indicate with the exception
of some minor signs of battery leakage in the D cell area as shown
in the 8th exhibit.
It would take a "
Radio Shack
" type to restore the meter, but not entirely impossible, mainly due to its some-what simplistic design as compared to today's micro-chip technology.
